Commissioning a stained glass window
If you have a space where you would like a stained glass window, this is the process I follow with my clients.

Consulting
I will ask for photos showing where the window is going so that I can get an idea of shape and light. If you have an idea about design we discuss this, as well as cost, shipping and delivery dates.

Design
Usually clients have an idea of what they would like or if not, I can make suggestions. I provide initial design ideas free of charge so there is no commitment to proceed on your part until you are happy with the design and glass choice.

Drawing and Cutting
I draw out the window design to scale allowing for leading and then cut the glass shapes. The pieces sit on the design so that I can see that they fit and are the right size.

Measurements
It is important to get the window aperture measurements spot on so I provide an easy to use template to do this.

Leading and Copper Foiling
Some intricate designs are better suited to copper foiling, this is where the glass edge is wrapped in copper foil before being soldered together. If it is a large window it will be fully leaded or a combination of copper foiling and leading.

Soldering
After the glass pieces are fitted together either by lead channels or by copper foil, the whole piece is soldered to fix the glass in place.

Cementing and Polishing
The lead used to hold glass has to be cemented in as well as soldered to give it extra strength. This is a messy but necessary step! When dry, the excess cement is cleaned off and the whole piece buffed and polished black. It can be left silver if you prefer.

Packing and Shipping
Shipping glass can be costly so I prefer to hand deliver where possible. If this is not an option then I use couriers and we agree a cost. The glass window is well packaged to prevent breakage during transport.

Progress Reports
At every stage I send my clients photos so that they can see how their window is being made.
When the glass is ready for shipping I send a final photo or video for sign off before shipping.
